I am inaugurating this new section because of my
conviction, well, anyway a strong leaning in the direction thereof, you know,
that the faculty is the heart of any institution of higher learning.
And, this being the first in what I hope will be a
long list of citations in support of absolutely unshakeable inclination to
align myself with something in that line—the importance of faulty and so-forth—I
have decided to begin with Maj. Gen. Gregg Martin, commandant, United
States Army War College, whose remarks during a 2010 Faculty Academic Awards
ceremony, would seem apropos:
“The faculty is the center of gravity at the USAWC
and this group has excelled above and beyond.” said Martin.
I mean, well, that’s right, isn’t it? Or something
like it, about all of us? Or maybe I’m wrong.
But look, they have the same sort of problems as the
rest of us, as you’ll see by the title of a recent conference at USAWC (above).
No,
I am sorry, they don’t seem to be listed in the Modern Language Association's Academic Workforce Data project, but Maj. General Martin, at least, knows how
to show some respect, even in an age if austerity.
So
perhaps we can all, or some of us—it's up to each of us, really, as a matter of
individual conscience—can take heart from the trend, such as it is.
Does the War College have any precarious faculty that you could interview regarding their treatment? On the other, when all the faculty are armed, administration either passes on scapegoating them for anything... or chairs meetings from the turret of a tank.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am making inquiries. Very sensitive, as you can imagine.
